Following a prolonged period of inactivity for rondallas in the Real Vila de Mugardos, dedicated enthusiasts and former members of the now-defunct Artistic Association "Trovo del Alba," which ceased operations in 1976, took decisive action to establish the "Rondalla Mugardesa" in 1990. This group was created with the clear mission of revitalizing a rich tradition that has thrived since ancient times in Ferrol and its surrounding region, where it has always commanded a strong presence. It is important to note that the first rondalla in the village, "Náufragos de Mugardos," originated in 1912. Since its foundation, the Rondalla Mugardesa has been a cornerstone of all events in Ferrol and the region celebrating the Festa das Pepitas. The group proudly parades through the streets of the Real Vila during the afternoon and evening of the eve of San José, continuing their celebrations until noon on the day itself, with a particular focus on honoring the Mugarde Woman. Furthermore, the rondalla competes annually in the Contest of Rondallas organized by the Mugardos City Council. This prestigious event gathers all groups from Ferrol and the surrounding areas at the pier of A Vila, followed by a vibrant procession through the streets to the Casino Mugardés, where they deliver an array of performances that foster unity and camaraderie among all participants. In addition to traditional "Pepitas" songs—including passes, waltzes, and dances—the group boasts a diverse repertoire of habaneras, boleros, global folk songs, panxolínas, and Galician themes. Their performances have reached audiences not just in the province of A Coruña but also in other significant Galician towns such as Vigo and Tui. From the very beginning, the group has garnered essential support from the Aula de Cultura of the Mugardos City Council, as well as from local businesses, hospitality venues, and community members. The Rondalla Mugardesa also proudly operates a free music school that trains instrumentalists, offering instrument loans from its own resources. Today, the group is presided over by Mr. Xosé Antón Bouza Rei and is comprised of 36 members, including vocalists and instrumentalists. The director is Mr. Francisco Javier Sancho Ribero. As of this year, 2025, the group proudly recognizes Dna. Rosa Varela Varela as its Madrid representative.
